Readorium increases nonfiction comprehension while deepening science knowledge
Readorium is a revolutionary, web-based, nonfiction comprehension program in science, for students in grades 3-8. It helps students at all reading levels develop skills and knowledge, while having fun.
Readorium is serious reading program played like a game. Students analyze substantive science text to answer questions correctly and earn a place in the Hall of Fame. They generally have a choice of 6 different books at any given time. As they complete books with more basic content, books with more advanced content are unlocked for them. Readorium books are written on 10-12 levels, so one student can read the content with more familiar vocabulary and a simpler structure, while another student can read the same content with more advanced vocabulary and a more complex structure. However, students at all skill levels learn the same information, are exposed to the same academic vocabulary, and answer the same higher-level thinking questions. The level of the text and supports students receive automatically adjust to their individual skill levels as they proceed. Of course, all students can progress to the advanced versions seamlessly, as they master vocabulary, hone comprehension skills, and increase their scientific knowledge!
Readorium was initially funded by three competitive Innovative Research Grants from the US Department of Education. This past year, Readorium won the 2016 National CODiE Award for Best Reading/English/Language Arts/Instructional Solution, was a 2016 ED Tech Digest Cool Tool Finalist, received the Trendsetter Award for Innovative Content by the Software and Information Industry Association, and was awarded the 2016 International Reimagine Bronze Plaque for K-12 Innovation. Readorium is also recommended by the National Science Teachers Association.
Readorium helps students with diverse instructional needs. It is beneficial for all students including English Learners and intervention students who read at a 2nd grade level, or higher. It can serve as a supplemental science reading program for Tier 1 students, as well as an intervention program for students in Tiers 2 and 3. It can be used with all hands-on science programs to increase independent learning and science knowledge. Although Readorium was initially designed for students in grades 3-8, it can be used to increase the nonfiction skills of English Language Learners, intervention students, and special needs students on the high school level, as well as adults who struggle with reading.
Program Design and Methods
Every Readorium student learns how to use strategies such as making connections; determining importance; making inferences; and using text, print, and graphic features to comprehend the same rich information. Personal book mentors help students construct meaning from the text whenever they become confused.
Readorium’s differentiated instruction starts with the system’s diagnostic testing (or initial book score.) The students are then formatively assessed on each book, and the system responds immediately to each student’s input. The number and types of hints students need to be successful determine the readability level of the text and support that is needed at any given time. This way, students continually receive targeted instruction based on their changing needs.
Readorium ‘s Teacher Resource Center provides staff with real-time reports on every aspect of student progress 24/7, as well as downloadable multimedia and printable resources to target classroom instruction effectively. Each student works toward mastery at his or her own pace.
