Reading difficulties affect students at every grade level, in every subject
MindPlay Teacher Companion™ is the product of over 15 years of collaboration among well-known experts in reading assessment and intervention. Drs. Nancy Mather and Janice Sammons of the University of Arizona partnered with Dr. Blanche Podhajski and Marilyn Varricchio of the Stern Center for Language and learning in Vermont to realize a dream that all teachers know how to deliver effective, scientifically based reading instruction. When teachers extend their expertise with this important knowledge, the authors estimate that 95% of our students would be able to read fluently.
To help make this dream a reality, the authors collaborated with MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach to create MindPlay Teacher Companion™ to give teachers an understanding of:
- how the English language works
- what a teacher needs to know to effectively teach reading
- how to help every student succeed
MindPlay Teacher Companion™ is designed to:
- fill gaps in teacher knowledge
- provide professional development and continuing education opportunities
- enable every teacher to deliver research-based reading instruction.
- demonstrate scientifically-based reading instruction using the lessons and activities provided in MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach (MVRC)
Why should schools implement MindPlay Teacher Companion™ professional development?
Unaddressed reading difficulties affect students at every grade level. MindPlay Teacher Companion enables teachers to understand and deliver explicit and systematic instruction. Teachers who participate in this interactive professional development program will be able to meet the educational literacy needs of all their students. Administrators can offer professional development and continuing education credits to teachers who participate.
MindPlay Teacher Companion™ extends teacher knowledge of research-based best practices. It is web-based and contains eight modules:
- Phonemic awareness
- Grammar for meaning
- Comprehension strategies
For students to achieve fluent, grade-level reading, teachers at all grade levels must help them increase their ability to read with understanding. The MindPlay Teacher Companion™ enables every teacher to have the knowledge to help students comprehend literature, science, and social studies texts.
